Special Olympics!

Family and Friends,

I was so blessed to work with the Vermont Special Olympics on Saturday. After a long week of tests, I was able to recenter myself and pretend like I was back home for a few days.

I have worked with disabled children for the past 5 years of my life. Some of my greatest memories as well as learning experiences have come from those moments. I have learned how to have compassion, understanding and patience. Qualities that I will need as I interact with the members of my platoon, begin my family and find myself in a work setting.

Working this weekend, I have questioned whether the term ‘special’ should be used in the name Special Olympics. But I have come to the conclusion that the name means more than what one may think. This organization and the athletes that compete are an amazing group of individuals. I do think that ‘Special’ has been placed in the name for a reason. But until you volunteer for such an amazing organization, the Special Olympics won't mean as much. I will attempt to break down the special characteristics of this event.

  • Volunteers- The people who spend all day running around to make sure everything is running smoothly are amazing. The hard work they put out is incredible. Yet, when they get the chance to talk to a special needs child, they are always smiling. These people are the first ones to offer a helping hand and a warm high five! They offer words of encouragement and keep the team motivated when scores may seem low.

  • Athletes- The Athletes are the most spectacular group of people around. They leave the bus with a huge smile on their face, ready to tackle an opponent. No matter if they are in a wheelchair or running a hundred miles an hour, each brings a unique dynamic to each team. Each with their own personality, they provide laughs and great memories. These athletes had to be resilient to their surrounds, yet never failed to come out on top.

  • Awards- The award system is so awesome. It is created in a way that not one athlete goes home without an award. Each individual is presented with a token of their awesome hard work, making them feel like a million bucks.

I challenge you to get involved. You never know, it may change your life like it did to mine. Here are some pictures of me through the years of some of the children I worked with.

Until next time, be easy my friends.
